As the global community continues to advocate for the realization of children’s rights, we are reminded of a fundamental principle that must remain at the forefront of our agenda: children's rights can never be taken for granted. For generations, children around the world were denied the protection they deserve simply by virtue of being children. It was only in 1989 that the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) was adopted—the most comprehensive document ever drafted for the protection of children. In 1991, Israel ratified the Convention, committing to protect every girl and boy within its borders.
Since October 7, 2023, and the ongoing conflict, UNICEF Israel has focused its efforts on the fundamental right of children in Israel to live in safety, peace, and protection. The reality of instability, ongoing fear, and exposure to traumatic events is profoundly impacting the mental health and well-being of children and adolescents in Israel. The need for accessible, professional emotional support is more urgent than ever. This is not a privilege; it is a fundamental right.
UNICEF Israel is currently advancing a dedicated program for children and youth in Israel focused on mental health and resilience-building. Developed in collaboration with UNICEF Global and supported by local and international partners, the program aims to expand community-based support networks, ensuring that every child can access appropriate and timely care.
Even as challenges persist, our commitment remains steadfast: to protect children and ensure that the right to mental health and resilience is an integral part of the lives of every child in Israel.
