One million children in the Sahel region could die within months without immediate humanitarian assistance. The children are suffering from severe acute malnutrition. Many more are at risk of stunting and irreversible, permanent brain damage and disability as a result of malnutrition. The situation is not a famine but a very severe nutrition crisis. Yet, the current situation in the Sahel is still not broadly covered by the global media. There is a short window of opportunity to put in place the programs and people who could prevent the situation of affected children from deteriorating into a large scale catastrophe. UNICEF is poised to scale up its programs to meet the needs but cannot do so without urgent funding.
